Pete Dungey, a graphic design student at the University of Brighton created a public art installation Pothole Gardens to highlight the deteriorating condition of roads around him. At once a brighting of the landscape it also communicates the collective problem by drawing your attention back to something we are all trained to just drive around.
I know my neighborhood would benefit from a similar installation. In fact Pete is encouraging everyone to participate and send him your photos. By encouraging others to participate this story begins to unfold across other regions, and subsequently other blogs, posts and eventually (if it hasn’t already happened) news stories. The nature of this story, frustration with road conditions, resonates with most people (even those who don’t drive) which in turn lowers the bar to participate, helping push this street art into the cross-media realm.
