A bachelor thesis by Jochen Winker and Stefan Kuzaj (University of Applied Sciences Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany) takes data or concept visualization to a new level. In this video you can see how they answer the question of how to increase immersion of data with three examples. The first and second demonstrations I found the most compelling. The first brilliantly and beautifully compares the amount of water pollution generated by different countries, while the second dramatically compares the amount of work people must expend in order to purchase food in different countries.
In much the same way that Edward Tufte revolutionized statistical graphics Winker and Kuzaj’s work uses technology to build an interaction that creates a meaningful connection between the user and data. This work is really stunning.
